Determining the point of failure?

I'm currently working with the nonlinear MES solver in mechanical and I have a few questions. Since the solver will continue to apply a load beyond what is reasonable (i.e. 1 million PSI Von Mises), what is a good way to determine failure? I'm currently working with brackets made of sheet steel and I'm loading them in assemblies. I would like to determine the displacement that causes the sheet steel to begin tearing. Can I assume that when the Von Mises stress surpasses the ultimate tensile strength of the material that it has ripped apart in that area? I'm using isotropic harening with von mises curve as the material element.

Thanks,

M
