Autodesk Simulation CFD 2012 Installation on Window Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

Hi,

One of our client is trying to install Autodesk Simulation CFD 2012 on Window Server 2008 R2 Enterprise and is having trouble doing that.

When he reported this issue to us, we told him that it cannot be installed on Windows Server 2008, based on the information in the following Autodesk Knowledge base page.

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=18552021&linkID=18154757

But the problem now is that, he says its already installed in another machine with Windows Server 2008 (which should not be possible, as Autodesk says CFD is not compatible with this OS).

So, we want to know, if we should tell him that it cannot and should not be installed on Windows Server 2008 or is there a way to install it and get it to work.

Also,

Autodesk says SOLVER alone can be installed on Server 2008 HPC Edition (SP1). Does this mean that there is a setup file just for the SOLVER of Simulation CFD?

Appreciate anybody who can help.

There is not a separate install for just the solvers.

You would have to use the full install.

Server 2008 and Server 2008R2 are notably different (different windows kernels), 2012 should be able to install on Win2k8 but not on 2k8R2

Hi,

You are correct, if we say it is unsupported but he has it working, we still cannot guarantee it will work on other machines.

The solver should work OK (for CFD 2013) as it states, which is the standard installation rather than another, but the job would have to be sent to it from an interface running on another machine (typiaclly this users own).

Does that help?

Kind regards,

Jon

Thanks hennebm & Jon and yes it does help. Now it's clear to me that CFD cannot be or rather, should not be installed on Windows server 2008.

But can you clarify one more thing if you don't mind.

If we have to use the full setup to install the solver on the Windows Server 2008, doesn't that mean DSE will also be installed. How is it possible (is it possible at all) to install solver alone and not the DSE on the Windows Server 2008?

Or is it like, both the SOLVER and DSE will get installed on Windows Server 2008 but only Solver will run while DSE won't?

I hope I'm not confusing you.

You are correct, simple answer. We install both but just the solver runs.

Best regards

Jon
