I did two test....with my 8meg Autodesk Sample file, it worked great...very fast....not 100% accurate, but it was fast and I could edit the walls and correct the mistakes...
Now....the large file. It's a 400 meg .pcg file. It's only one of a sequence of accurate scans. I was able to load multiple laser scans, but it never allowed me to extract information. It would auto rotate the axis, but I could not add levels or extract a floor or wall. I think it's just too large of a file. I even loaded just the 400 meg file. Again, it would not extract the floor or walls. It would "hang"...processing and processing and I could not use my machine. Task manager had Revit using over 5 gigs of RAM.
I'm using an XBOXX 2 Xeon E5530 2.40 ghz. Windows 7 64 bit. An Nvidia Quadro FX 4800 (1536 MB) and 12 gigs of RAM.
I tested the tool with a 12GB pointcloud yesterday, worked really good! The project was workshared with pointcloud and centralfile on server.
Without the crop point cloud feature the pointcloud was hard to navigate in 3D, but with some croping it became as smooth as working locally in a non workshared project!
Crop/uncrop + hide/unhide pointcloud saved my day!
(computer was a intel i7 with 12GB ram and Nvidia quadro 4000 card.)
I had tested the technology preview yesterday and I think it's very useful. The file I tested was a 300meg *.pcg file.
I think that a good addition to Revit would be support for pointcloud in family files (for example being able to link a small pointcloud of a scanned window on a facade would enable you to create the window family more accurate).
At this point the team is collecting feedback from the 2012 user base. That group is large enough for the team to get the feedback it needs. Should the team decide it needs to expand its audience to get more feedback, it may conduct a 2013-based technology preview.
I love the point cloud tools, i have been testing them as part of a paper i'm preparing for RTC AU 2012, i really hope to see these tools inside Revit 2013 soon to use alongside 123D Catch, these tools are amazing and have the ability to change the way projects are conceived! Great works guys - keep 'em coming!
