Panel pointwelded to beams - modelling connections

Hi.

I've made a model of a cantilevered platform consiting of beams and panels. The panel is a steelplate and its supposed to be pointwelded to the upperflanges of the steel beams in different points along the beam lengths.

I want the plate to be able to move horisontally (x and y) and lift (z+), but in the weldingpoints i want the panels to be completely fixed to the beams. No matter how much i experiment with compatible nodes, linear releases and rigid links i cant seem to get this right.

Is there a way to make this happen?

Im not allowed to post the actual model, but i made a similar example (test.rtd).

I want the panels to be fixed at the two panel edges above every secondary steel beam (two fixed points between panel and beam for each beam, total of 20 fixed points). All other points should only be able to transfer vertikal forces to the beams in the negative Z-direction (global system).

Two solutions, I guess, if I understood you properly

1. Compabitble nodes - you will have to create nonlinear functions for each dof

here his the movie example how to create compatible node between panel node and bar node : http://screencast.com/t/mkkzC5Hj

2. or you have to lower bars a little and connect nodes by dummy ("kind of rigid link") bar and apply correct release on top of if.

(depending on bar LCS UZ+ or UZ- should be selected, explaination here:

example for one pair of nodes : http://screencast.com/t/G8Q9jtvq0MMb
