Error message: "Encountered an improper argument"

Many times when i am trying to save a model, an error message appears: "Encountered an improper argument".

Any idea why it's comming out? However, it seems that the saving is taking place o.k but i am not completely sure...

For instance, lately i noticed a problem in a model where i couldn't properly have access in the soil results of a spread footing (the diagrams of soil stresses distribution that follows the foundation results was dissapearing after i was recalling the structure view and tried to view them again) and i don't know if it is because of that message.

Another "related" question: what does exactly the "Repair mode" solves and what are the "consenquences" of making that kind of saving to the model?

When the path to the file has no Cyrillic letters i noticed that the message doesn't appear, indeed.

Generally, whas there any kind of (deeper) mistakes to the file or was it just that message appearing?

Can you also tell me about the "Repair mode"? When can/should we use it?

I'm not aware of any issues with a file saved with such message. This should be solved (no message displayed)in Robot 2014 by support of Unicode.

It is intended as the file recovery option.

I am not sure when we should do such a saving (in repair mode): When we face "unusual" problems?

Furthermore, what happens to the model when we save in repair mode? I noticed that after that the model looses some definitions (e.g some steel connections, footings etc). Which are those definitions to be lost?

Tuctas,

I hope this information will explain some unexpected effects observed when opening in "Repair Mode"

Open in "Repair Mode" should be used in case of damaged RTD or if its size is abnormally big because of many edit/delete operations and discontinuous internal structure.

But when using this type of open it is important to remember/know about some topics to avoid "damaging" instead of "correcting":

1/ The first point is that opening in "Repair Mode" removes from the model its Job Preferences and its properties (like the information in which version it was created). The file with "(Recovered)" in its name, created by default (without any Save or Save As command) after opening in "Repair Mode" has no such information inside.

2/ That is why such file is opened with default job preferences which can be completely different than its original job preferences - different units, codes, analysis settings, ....!!! After using Save or Save As command these "new" job preferences are saved inside the file replacing the original ones.

3/ When sending RTD file created in step 1/ and opening it on another machine it will "use" the default job preferences of this another machine because it has no job preferences inside. So in practice opening the same *(Recovered).RTD file on 5 different machines with different default job preferences it is possible to obtain 5 different sets of codes active (and different from the original ones).

The steps to perform to avoid such effects when using "Repair Mode"are as follows:

a/ opening the original model without "Repair Mode", opening Job Preferences and using "Save current parameters as default":

default_job_pref.png

b/ starting a new project and opening  the original model with "Repair Mode"

repairmode.jpg

c/ using Save As or Save (Save As recommended)

Step a/ results in saving job preferences of the original RTD file as default job preferences. That is why when opening this RTD in "Repair Mode" these job preferences will be still used. In step c/ these job preferences will be saved back inside the RTD.

I hope these explanations are clear enough and will be useful:)

Thank you for your illustrative answer Pawel.

I suppose that if there is no any serious matter it's better to avoid the opening in Repair mode...

That what you said about "abnormally big size of file because of many edit/delete operations" made a bit anxious but anyway..

  Regards.

Of course it should be used only when necessary. Especially that some components of the file are deleted when opening in "Repair Mode" - like results of analysis, RC design components.

I am having the same warning when try to run wind simulation with wind profile constant velocity factor of 2.

Works well with velocity factor of 1.

It´s a simple test on a single 10x10m panel

Any ideas??

Thx Artur ,

But when will we have real solutions and real new features re-appearing in Robot???

Almost everyday a new problem arises and we are lucky if the problem is "reported to development team" .

When will Robot stop being the "work-around" software and be redirected to a normal path that can lead him to be the best strucutral analysis software???Smiley FrustratedSmiley Frustrated

Hi @Rafacascudo

I'm sorry but I'm not able to answer any 'when' questions . What I can do is to try to find a solution within the existing options of RSA. I know it is not what would make you happy but this is all I'm personally able to offer Smiley Sad
