foundation slab depression

When I put an opening -2'-0" from the top of a 30" foundation slab for a sump pump for an elevator pit. The opening punches all the way through. When I select the opening I can see the opening stops, but the there is still a hole all the way through. Why is this and how do I fix this?

in the image i have the opening selected and my mouse is just rolled over the 30" foundation slab so you can see the out line.

Any opening family that intersects an element automatically cuts all the way through it.

To do what you want to do, you will need to use a face-based void family.

I have attached a very basic sample file in which you can control the size on a per-instance basis.  You can also do this with in-place voids  if you have more complex shapes to model.
