Object Style Subcatagories

What does the subcatagories in the Object Style Settings box control? I know you can create new ones and modify existing ones, but I don't see any changes to the objects when these are changed. For example, there is a "Plan Rep" subcatagory under the "Structural Foundation" catagory. I made some changes in this subcatagory so they were different than the main catagory and didn't see any difference. It seems that it only reads the settings that are set on the main catagory. The reason I'm asking specifically about the "Plan Rep" subcatagory is that I would like to see different colors and linetypes on my plan views than what I see in my 3D model views. For example, we show a dashed line for wall footings on our plans. But, I would like to see a solid line for the 3D model view. Is this possible?

Thanks

Subcategories are used for user defined objects in non-system family
families. such as doors, casework, columns, etc.

Flush the "plan rep" from your brain. That was ADT. This is Revit. What you
are looking for is view settings and view templates. Each view can have its
own line setup for each object type. It is far simpler than trying to
configure everything at the object level as in ADT. This is all very basic
Revit stuff.

you may want to look at using filters for this.
