Joining horizontal and sloped I beams

Hi all,

see attached picture!

I have one beam that's a bolded piece

between a sloped and an horitontal I beam, same section.

Can I..

A) Join them into the project

or

B) should I model a dedicated family?

Option "A" would be really appreciated!

Stefano

If you need to create a mitered join between the two beams, you can use the "Beam End Join Editor"

("Modify" Tab>"Geometry" Panel>"Beam/Colun Joins")

This will only work if both beams are the same type (size).

Enable the tool in a view  where you can see the beams, and use the arrows at the beam join to manipulate the join until it matches what you want.

Does this help?

I should trust Revit more sometimes!

Just want to add to Joe post

Both beams need to have the same Z direction Justification.

And if I'm not mistaken, in order for the Beam Join tool to work, the 2 intersecting beams need to meet at the same elevation? Do I have that right?

No. you can joint 2 slope beams from diferent working plane as long as you set "Z direction Justification" the same. e.g both are TOP or BOTTOM. Can be found in properties window.

I am able to create a miter join with two beams with different z direction justifications , as long as they are in the same plane but not co-linear.

Can you maybe post a picture  of a situation where this is not working for you?

Hello everybody,

i have an update, this time on Concrete...
I am using, just to make sure it works properly.. the normal

famiily of Cast In Place beam from Autodesk Seek.

Please look at images:

The beam automatically join, I have an image
joined and one unjoined.

My problem is:
It doesn't seem to be possibile the work on Node that we did for steel.

Should I use precaset instead of cast-in place concrete, in order to have the lower node
to work properly?

They all are same family and type, have same Z-Direction justification and lie on

lower, bottom levels, sloped reference plane as hosts.

It sound weird to me, so I might be missing something..
thanks in advance for your reply.

It seems to work only with Pre-Cast Beams: why is that?

Can someone give me the background understanding of this behaviour?

Thanks! Stefano

Joe,

This is situation. Beams are same type on different work plane.

I check again and it's working when beams has different "z-Direction Justification" as long as none of them = "Other". I don't even have the litle blue arrow appear when I click "Beam/Column Joins"

Test with a simple model having 2 beams only, and it's working fine even with "z-Direction Justification" = other
