Cut Geometry on a Beam

I'm trying to model a tapered glulam beam and figured using the Cut Geometry tool what be a simple method of doing this. Could someone clarify for me how Revit determines what side of the reference plane has the portion of the element that is kept vs cut? In my example, I initially had a fairly shallow reference plane in-line with the bottom of roof sheathing that was somewhat high-up relative to the beam depth. However, Revit kept trying to keep the upper (smaller) portion of the beam which was above my roof sheathing - this was not the intended end result. I placed an arbitrary reference plane at a steeper angle, repeated the process and success... the top of the beam was cut. I aligned that arbitrary reference plane to the bottom of sheathing and went on my way. But, this doesn't really explain to me the proper way of utilizing the tool. Any help is appreciated.

Try using the Opening - By Face tool, then sketch the portion you do not want to see. The Cut geometry tool requires two objects of the same type to work. i use this with in place void forms to cut irregular shapes in things, for example if a 24" wall needs a notch of certain depth, i would use this instead of breaking the wall.

Thank you for your post.  In addition to the above suggestion (thank you conormccartney3897), I have included a helpful link below with details on Cut geometry features and settings.  I hope this further helps in answering this inquiry.

You could trim the long side of a beam using the cut geometry tool no void required

Do the following

1. draw a reference plane at the far end of the long side of the beam to be cut
2. cut the beam with the cut command
3. move the reference plane to the desired location

Thank you. That works perfectly. The beam/column joins is highly unreliable. Gratitude.
