I have ran into this a few time. I have noticed if the beam are not connected to each other correctly then that cause the join not to happen. Make sure that the grip that is a dot when you select the beam is on the center of the beam if you are coming into the side or if your connecting end to end the two dot grips need to be connected together at a point. If there a fraction of an inch off you wont get a beam join from what I have noticed.
