Creating mech equipment families

I would like to ask for a guide in creating BIM class mechanical equipment. How to do it correctly, proper system, properties of the connectors, should it be preset, calculated or system, how to make it work with a schedule, organization of shared parameters. What stuffs are needed to be known first before proceeding in creation.
