Creating Parametric Detail Parts-"Repost"

"THIS IS A REPOST" so that any email response goes to my office:

To all,

I'm trying to create a Parametric Detail Part and it seems as if this is not so easy.

In the past I was linking my old AutoCAD detailed parts (Blocks) to Revit, tracing over them to create a new "Dumb Part".

Now we would like to properly create a part that changes with the information being plugged in however, something simple like adding a reference plain in the "Z" axis seems to have me at a stopping point.

Tried researching this on the "WikiHelp" and there seems to be nothing out there

As usual any help, or a point in the right direction would be appreciated.

Thanks,

If you add some dimensions, you can associate a "Type" parameter to those dimensions.  Then, create different types and change the dimensions based on the "Type".

Setting up parameters, keep in mind that there are Instance parameters and Type parameters.  Instance means each individual object of the same type can have different values, whatever the kind of parameter you are using.  The Type parameter means all objects of the selected type will have that same value.

I'm guessing you want to add depth to this square?  You might be better off creating an extrusion, and go to an elevation view, create a Reference Plane in the elevation, and pull the extrusion up to meet the plane, locking it to the plane when it displays. (I noticed there are no elevation views in this family...)

The family editor is frustrating at first, but the learning curve is steep.  Let me know if you need more help.

Hi Milt

Details are 2D objects. They have no Z elevation. If you want to create a part/detail that is 3D you need to start in a different template such as Generic Equipment or Mechanical equipment ect.

Dear Milton Fitzgeraid

I checked your other post about the family. It seems that you want to create a cube shape geometry, and control its width, length, height, and also set material for it.

If you want to get such 3D shape, you have to use "Generic Model.rft" family template. Below is the general steps:

1. Click New- -Family, select "Generic Model.rft" family template

2. Draw refercen planes, and add dimention for them, then select the dimention, add label Parameter for the dimension, then you can create a parameter, for example, Width, this parameter will be related to this dimension. Same step for Length, Height parameter.

3. Create Extrusion geometry, and align the edge to the reference plane.

4. Create new family types, and set different parameter value for each type.

I created a video to show the detail step how to create such geometry and add parameter. Please check link below.

Below is also Revit Family Guide, you can download it, it has document and dataset, it is a step by step tutorial, you will know how to create family after checking this guide. It is for 2010 version, no update version, but it is OK, the basic information is the same.

Thanks.

Dear Milton Fitzgeraid

I created a cube shape with dimentions parameter and material based on your description. See "family1.rfa". FYI.

You can edit it and modify it based on your requirement.

Thanks.

To All,

Thanks again for your responses with a special thanks to "Lei Lan"

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/user/viewprofilepage/user-id/485696

Upon following the online screen cast  (http://screencast.com/t/1TSfQRTm9) and review frame by frame, and...

another “Read through” of  my printed documentation I was able to successfully create a blank “Parametric Part” that is editable via the properties dialog box.

Lei Lan also provided me with a new part / Family which I will test as a "Duplicate"

THANKS AGAIN !!!
