unrecoverable error

under Revit 9, I get an error message "unrecoverable error has occured. the program will now terminate..."
would there be a way to audit Revit files or a recover function like there is in AutoCAD ?

Yes, the Journal Files (see Tutorials under HELP menu - search Journal files):

Click the General tab and make the following changes:
Under Notifications, select your preferred Save Reminder interval, and select Normal for Tooltip Assistance.
Under Username, enter the name you want to use during worksharing. Your login name displays by default.
Under Journal File Cleanup, select values for When number of journals exceeds and Delete journals older than (days).

Journal files are deleted automatically after their number exceeds the value you specify. Journal files are text documents that record each step during your Revit Building sessions. These files are used primarily in the software support process. Journals can be run in order to detect a problem or recreate lost steps or files. They are saved at the termination of each Revit Building session.

Also, there is an AUDIT whcih I forgot to include in the original reply. See the following from the HELP menu:

If desired, select Audit to scan all elements in the project.
This option can detect and fix corrupt elements in the project. This option can greatly increase file opening time. It is recommended to use it only for periodic maintenance of large workset-enabled files or for preparation for upgrade.

Also, Revit saves the your file if some mishap occurs and shuts your Revit program and unsaved project files. Normally Revit will say that an unrecoverable error has occurred and ask you if you want to safe your file before Revit shuts down. This file is saved under your file name with the inclusion of the word "recovery" in the fnamed file. You cna open this file directly as it has the RVT extension.
