swapping Families/Types cross-Category?

Hello.

Is there a way to change the Family Type of a Component Instance,
to a Family Type that is of a different RVT Category,
*without* having to delete the old and re-place the new?

If I understand your question, yes, but indirectly, and frankly not
worth the effort for only one or two instances. However,if you have a
lot of this to do:

Edit Family2, change the category to match Family1, load into project.
(Leave Family2 open, for ease.) In your project, swap the Family1:TypeA
instances to Family2:TypeB. Go back to the Family Editor, change
Family2 back to its proper category, and load into project again.

Pay attention to origin locations in the two families. If not similar,
things will move all over the place.

Also make sure the families have the same hosting requirements, or
objects will be deleted and/or errors and warnings will ensue...

RVT balks at this, FYI.

I initially tried just re-assigning the Category of the nested Family in the
Family Editor and re-loading into the Host Family,
and got an error message that a Family of the same-name of a different
category already exists, or something like that.

Do you think it's a Family Editor limitation,
but not a in a Project? Possibly?

Perhaps. (you hadn't mentioned nested families, so I didn't verify
there) I know for a fact that I've swapped doors, windows, mechanical
louvers, and several other wall-hosted types of various categories
within a project environment using this method...

I just realized that I had the nested Family that I was trying to update to
a new Category linked to a parameter in the host Family.

Because the parameter is Category-specific, I'm guessing
that is why RVT was throwing the error?

Although, the feedback in the error message did not allude to this in any
way.
(why not?)
