simple wall tag

hello everyone,
im new to revit, and i would like anyone to please shed some light on how does wall tags work on revit.
is the tag suppose to recognize a wall type when i place it over a wall? when i place a tag, the tag is empty- what should be my next step, give it a tag number? or is it suppose to label itself as the tags for windows and doors do.
any suggestions is greatly apreciated..
thanks.

Give it a number or letter then all subsequent walls that are tagged will
receive that designation. Now remember you will have to create seperate
walls with different names to give them different wall tags. ie 4 7/8" 1-hr
rated stud wall versus a 4 7/8" non rated stud wall.

Whenever I try to insert a wall tag and relable it tell me that I will be changing a type parameter. This sounds bad. Is this okay to do?

As long as you want all walls of that type to have the new label, this
is just fine.

So is there no way to create different tags for each wall type and have it label a specific tag to the corresponding wall type? Does that make sense?

No, using OOTB tags, you cannot tag the same wall type, Generic-6" for
example, with different values in each tag.

If two walls are indeed different (hence the need for different
designation on the plans), then properly model them as such by creating
a new wall type in the project browser and using it.

Alternatively, you *can* create instance-based tags and manually input
different values for each and every wall if you wish. But you'd be
missing the point of Revit as a BIM platform capable of accurate modeling.

Well, I have created seperate wall types for each wall but I wanted to tag them to show what type of wall they are. Is there another way to do this without using the OOTB tags?

See my first post:
