revit not responding when saving file

I'm working in Revit 2012.  Everytime I save my file it just sits there and thinks.  When CTRL-ALT-DEL revit is not responding so I have to end task.  The file is not of abnormal size and has been functioning fine until today.  I haven't done or made anything in revit out of the ordinary.  When I re-open the file I get a "seek failed" message.  I open the backup file just fine, but again, cannot save it without it locking up on me again.  I have audited and purged.  I have copied and saved a new file under a different name.  Same problem.

Any suggestions?

You could try linking the file into a new Revit file and then binding to remove any corrupt entities.

I have discovered that this is a problem with every revit file I open.  It is indeed saving the file, but it takes 5 to 10 minutes before the save is complete.  I have downloaded service packs 1 and 2.  Didn't help. Anything else I can try?

What are the specs on your machine?  Have you installed any other new software recently (Autodesk or otherwise)?  Does the problem happen when other people open up the file (on separate machines)?

Intel (R) CoreTMi7CPU. 2.94 GHz, 11.9 GB Ram, Windows XP 64 bit. Nvidia Quadro FX 5500 graphics card.

The problem is only on my machine and is with any and every file I try to save.

I loaded Revit 2012 and 30 day trial of 3dsMax Design about one month ago.  I have revit 2009,2010,2011 and AutoCad 2009, 2010 and 2011 loaded.  Could it be a problem that I have so many versions loaded?

No, it's probably not because you have so many versions loaded.  That's fairly typical.  I thought it might be because you had insufficient RAM, but 12 GB is plenty (for files up to about 240 MB).

I doubt that the number of versions of the program you have installed has anything to do with it, but it's hard to say.  Make sure when you save that you have open a relatively "lightweight" view (i.e. a drafting view with little or no info in it) and that there are no other views open (especially 3D or shaded views).

If that doesn't work, you might want to try uninstalling/reinstalling Revit to see if that repairs the issue.

If the issue continues after cleanly reinstalling Revit (TS16828836), make sure you are saving to the local hard drive. Saving to a network share could introduce delays (which we can rule out by saving locally).

Also, if you try saving to a new name, is there a long delay before the save dialog appears, or is the delay only after you have clicked the Save button?

I have always worked from the server in the past without a problem.  Weird how it can just slow down out of the blue.  I haven't had time to reload Revit 2012, but I did move it to my local drive and it completed a save in 2 seconds.  Thank you so much for your help!

Using REVIT MEP2012 and have the same problem. The file isn't being saved. Once this starts up I have to reboot the machine and save every five minutes. I am saving to a local drive.

I am having a similar problem with Revit 2015. I just installed mine afew days ago and the first time I went to save a project it froze up and I eventually had to restart my system and lost all of my work. This has happened every time. How do I save to a local hard drive to see if this solution will also fix my problem? Keep in mind that when I try to do 'save as' it also freezes.

It sounds like you are seeing the issue described in the following article:

Crash or freeze when accessing File Open or Save dialogs within Autodesk Revit

Same problem here.  Revit Building Design Suite 2015, Windows 7 x64, tons of memory, fast video, etc.  Worked for about a year without any problems, then suddenly out of the blue, no save, or save-as functionality.  No new software installs (god knows what kind of updates it does on it's own at night while I'm sleeping) Try explaining to your client that you can't work on their project because your software has suddenly kicked you in the balls.

I had the same issue and the same solution.  But once I saved to the server, no one else could use the file.  Normally this would not be a very large issue, but this was the template file everyone was going to be using.  The fix, just a few moments ago, was to change the file name of the file on the server. Then, copy and paste the file from your local machine to the server.  Once mine copied over, I was able to open, change, and save.  I never solved the problem, it just went away after doing this.
