revit architecture- template design

Hi everyone,
I am making a custom template in revit architecture 2009.
Can i build from default template or need i start as 'new'.

For instance, in the 'family' under 'walls' there are a list of wall
all of which i would not need in my custom template.
How do i address it.

As i go deeper into customizing my template will the use of
'default' template have some limitations as compared to preparing
'new' from scratch.Please clarify. Thx

I created my custom templates from the defaults (one for
residential and one for commercial projects), saved as, added what I
needed and deleted what I didn't.  Actually my custom
templates evolve as I get deeper into Revit.  I have not found any
limitations in starting with the default ones.
