Upgrading Central file to 2011

We just updated to Revit 2011 (our first upgrade). We went through a very confusing 45 minutes of how to upgrade the central file and local file and have them sync. Is there a step by step process that someone can either tell us or give us a link to some place that does so this confusion doesn't happen again. I was hoping it was as simple as opening up either the central or local, having it update the file along with its counter part and wala your done. It doesn't seem that simple.

Hello,

I would recommend viewing a video we put together on Upgrading files to start. It covers the best practices and things to keep in mind while upgrading files. The video is about 15 minutes long...

Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqZEU03QHmM

Tell me what you think.

I would think it would be best when you upgrade the central file to open it
with an Audit, purge unused/unnecessary elements and then save it with the
"Compact Central File" option.

Then you would simply create NEW local files from that and you're done.

Harlan,

Just curious, do you guys host your videos elsewhere like somewhere on
the autodesk site? I don't have access to youtube from the office, and
most of my colleagues don't seem to either.

First of all, please see the videos that Harlan posted.

Next: there is no reason to upgrade the locals. In 2010, have all project
team members Sync with Central to make sure the central file is up to date.
After syncing, all Local files are trash, you can delete them. Have
everyone close Revit 2010. Have one person Open the Central file in 2011,
and let it upgrade. After upgrading, save the Central file and close out of
it. Then each team member in 2011 makes new local copies and goes back to
work.

Best Practice is to make a backup copy of the 2010 version of the central
file before upgrading and saving it in 2011 version.

That helped to some degree. It did show me some steps I was not aware of. It would be good if it took it one step farther at the end when it showed how to create/upgrade the new central file how to create the local copy too. As I found out you can't just open your original local file after upgrading the Central. You have to do another save as on the upgraded central file and save it locally to create that link. Much like when you start a brand new project. I thought it would work a little differently seeing that I already had a central and local file started. It would be nice if it was a little more "automatic". Just open up your local file, like you would any old time and have a prompt to ask you to update and it would update both the local and central at one time with a backup of the old version just incase. Can you tell I'm still in the AutoCAD mind set. I'm getting better though little by little. Thanks for your help.

just remember that local files are disposable. Just be sure they are Sync'd
first. The central file is your project. Another best practice is to make
new local files regularly. Some do it once a week, others more often. This
assures the local files are the most up to date, and it also helps keep the
file sizes smaller.

Unfortunately, right now we do not, the videos are only available on YouTube. I do apperciate your situation though and will make sure the feedback gets past along.

Glad that it helps a little bit. Another video you should check out is the one on Troubleshooting Worksharing. It covers the best practices for workshared projects and ways to fix some sticky worksharing issues.

Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1zPHwQARhE

Its on YouTube and about 15 minutes long again.

Thanks. It is hard to think of a file as trash but it makes sense now that I better understand the process. We did make backups of the 2010 file prior to doing anything, just incase. Thanks again for the help.

As temporary work around if anyone has an iPhone or for that matter any
phone capable of viewing youtube then you can watch the videos that way. I
realize that may not necessarily be the best solution but it works in a
pinch.

Craig,

Great suggestion!
I have tried to do that sometimes with my iphone, but, most of the time,
clicking on a link in newstap doesn't work to take me to the right video
with the itunes app, I just get an error, and trying to search for them
manually is a bit of a nightmare.

A pathetic work around is to bookmark the videos from my home pc, then
access my favorites list from the iphone the next day while I'm at
work... but, you know, most of the time, that's way more effort than I
can make and it's still not giving me a big enough view of what I want
to look at.

Thanks for the tip though, it's appreciated.

Another thing you could try, when on YouTube at home.
Do a search for Get YouTube Video. It allows you to download the video as an
MP4, which you could take to work and view on your PC.

Interesting suggestion, I might give that a try just to see how it works.

Not so easy.

Lots of offices are blocking sites like youtube and facebook... for obvious
