Uninstalling

anybody know how to uninstall an old version?
1. Why on earth does Revit not have a clear method to uninstall? ) is that not a MS requirement for its certified software program?)
2. when i try to unintall from Windows "add/ remove programs" utility, it wants the original msi file which i no longer have.
3. The new disk has no option to remove/ overwrite on older versions.

When you install a newer version it will remove the old one automatically.

You are going to need to provide more info. What version are you trying to
unistall and install? Have you successfully installed the new version?

I don't know the answer other then to find the original media and use the
original msi like it asks for. However, do you really need to unistall 8.1?
I don't know about you, but I always end up having computer problems when
uninstalling Autodesk software. It seems to cause problems with other
programs and I end up having to reload the entire computer. If you don't
need the disk space, then just leave it there. I'd delete the shortcut and
not worry about it.

I started in R6 and I am now running R9. I have installed all previous
installs on 8 workstations without a problem.

when you install, there is a dialog box that says 'the previuos versions are
installed, check the boxes if you want them removed'

It lists all previous versions, just check off the boxes.

Thanks for that tip... but that dialog box never showed up when I did that. when i tried putting the 9.1 in again, it worked but did not bring up 8.1. (image attached)

I think something unusual and wrong happened on your computer. It sounds
that cache of installs that Windows maintains was corrupted. Normally old
versions of Revit would be listed in Windows Add/Remove programs dialog.
Underneath Revit relies on Windows Installer for all its installation needs.
The dialog shown by Revit that offers to uninstall previous versions is
nothing but a convenience item, everything still goes through Windows
Installer. The fact that old version is not listed in Add/Remove programs
and if Windows Installer requests media containing old version setup points
to the corruption of Windows setup cache.

Are you sure you haven't already removed the program? When Revit
uninstalls, it removes the program, but not the content or directory files.
If the MSI is missing, you may have removed the program when istalling the
new version, and just have the content left which can be deleted through
Explorer. Check the Program folder for 8.1, it should be mostly empty
compared to the new install.

No...i have both working well!
i actually tried to uninstall prior to installing 9.1 (from windows)- which failed. and when i installed 9.1 it did not find the older version.
this is driving me nuts... should i get the 8.1 media (not sure from where) and try?

You can try using this utility from Microsoft. It allows you to bypass the
Windows installer to directly remove the programs. Files and folders have
to be manually removed.

Have to ask... is it a legal copy? I wouldn't install those hacked warez
copies if you paid me. Not only is it illegal, it screws a lot of things
up.

I was having problems on this too on the newest version. Here's the trick: Don't automatically resort to the add/remove programs!

Open "My Computer"/Computer (depends if you have vista, etc.) and click on your hard drive/disk (sorry, i'm not very tech savvy:P). Once you get in there you'll see a folder for Autodesk. Double-click on the folder and delete whatever is in that. Then go back and click on Program Files. In here you'll see a list much like the one you'll find in add/remove programs. Find the Autodesk program folder and delete all of its contents, then go back and delete the folder on a whole. All this will be in your recycle bin-empty your bin and viola:)
