Rookie question re: temp dimension units while drawing

I'm teaching myself Revit, and can't locate the tip I need: How can I limit temporary dimensions to something manageable like eighths, sixteenths or thirty-seconds of an inch?

It's too hard to tweak a line from 127/256" to 1/2", or to edit the length after drawing, by typing the correct dimension. It's also too hard to remember how many 256ths 7/16" is.

I must be missing something.

I would suggest not to rely much on the temp dimension. You can go ahead and get the design laid out and later edit the dimensions as you want.
E.g. for a room layout; draw all four walls and then select each wall and edit the temp dimension per the design requirement.

My goodness! How quaintly inefficient. I must be spoiled by ALLPLAN.

Nevertheless, thanks very much for the info. I have no doubt I can get used to doing, then modifying.

While drawing a wall just type the desired
dimension that you want and it will extend or contract to that
dimension.

Yes. I discovered that solution. Thanks.

In my experiments up till now, I have been using one or another of the standard templates, where I ran into the problem.

Just now, I created a new project with no template. I found that the temporary dimensions are limited to inches. This is exactly what I want, and is evidence that the setting I want exists. The question is where?

I would be astonished if it were not possible to specify any tolerance interval from x/256, through x/16, x/8, x/4, . . . to whatever.

Thanks for all responses. All helpful. Anyone know where the setting I need is?

In further testing using various templates, I have found that it is normal for the temporary dimension tolerance setting to be 6". How I got stuck with x/256" on an earlier experimental project, I don't know.

A 6" tolerance is much less frustrating, but I would still like to know where the tolerance is specified.

Any ideas?

I believe that you are looking for the Snaps
setting.  Go to the Tools menu at the top and you will find the Snaps
option most of the way down the menu.  In the Snaps dialog box, you will
find a series of distances listed under the checkmark box for “Length Dimension
Snap Increments”.  By default, you will see 4 different dimensions listed
with a semi-colon between each dimension.

The dimensions represent the snap distance increments that you are
using and therefore will see on the temporary dimensions.  The first
dimension in that list is the snap increment when you are zoomed out a long
ways.  As you zoom in closer, the other snap increments take effect, so
when you are zoomed in really close you will see the last snap increment in the
list.

You can modify this list to get settings that you want.  For
instance, if you are working on a project with masonry walls, you might change
the 6” setting to 8”.

Note that those are in effect if you have the appropriate checkmark in the
appropriate box mentioned above.

I hope that helped.

I think you solved it. I found the SNAPS settings in the SETTINGS menu, not in TOOLS.

Without knowing the design strategy of the length dimension increments field, which you described clearly, I couldn't prove to myself that that was what I was looking for.

Thanks very much

I'm glad that helped.  Sorry for misleading
you about the Tools menu.  I don't know why I typed that.

Hello.

I would like to have more inform regarding this post.  I have been frustrated with the temporary dimension displaying to the nearest 1/256".  My preference is if I can see temporary dimension to the nearest 1/16" and how do I do this?

I tried changing the snap distance as mention here but have had no luck.  Will someone please guide me a little more on what to do.  It will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

EJ
