We came across this problem yesterday. having to change the name of some of the files on a project we edited the file names using the Revit Server Administrator. The length of a filename wasn't changing we were just correcting an error in the project number within the filename. One of the files wouldn't rename and we got this error message
The filename is perfectly fine when saved through the User Interface, so by detaching the original file and saving with the corrected name the problem was bypassed, but it begs the question why the restriction is there and what it is protecting against, and more importantly what is the risk of having filenames longer than 40 characters.
there is no warning issued through the User Interface and I am struggling to find this documented anywhere...
Can anyone shed any light on this...?
thanks in advance
We have recently run into this problem as well. In adddition, we have had errors in file synchronization, and think it may be related (not clear yet).
Wish there was a better resource for Revit Server 2014. Love where it's going, really need true supporting documentation to go along with it.

Does anyone know if there is still at 40 character limit for Revit Server 2014 and newer? Or has it been fixed in recent versions? Thanks!
