Regular and 3d Views Toolbar always greyed out

Hello,

 

Forgive me as I am still learning Autodesk Revit:

 

Everytime I open the Autodesk Revit application and open a project I try and open a view (2d or 3d).

 

When I do this the toolbar on the top is greyed out and I can't figure out how to actually do an edit.

 

I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
