When opening Revit Architecture 2011 x64, a dialog from my web browser opens asking if I want to download the index.html file from the temp folder where revit saves the recent file information, then opens the recent file page in the web browser.
So far as I can tell, I can still use the program without any other problems, and I know it is possible to disable the recent file page on startup, but this just started happening for seemingly no reason, and it makes me nervous to not do anything and assume it won't become a bigger problem.
I have tried changing the program association of html files, but all that does is change which browser opens when Revit starts. I also tried running the repair option from Revit setup, but it didn't change anything
Anyone have any idea what is going on, whether it might get worse, and if there is anything I can do to fix it.
The Revit Recent Files list is the index.html, which is stored in your specific user Temp folder.
You can see this location by navigating to:
%Temp%
There should be at least one index.html file in there for each instance of Revit you have open.
If you launch the index.html file, you will see it is the Recent Files List page.
I’m wondering if your Internet Security Settings recently changed to a higher level, where it may be prompting you to launch any html content from the workstation. I would verify your Control Panel > Internet Options > Security, and verify the level.
Also what is the default Web Browser on the workstation?
Thank you,
I checked the setting and it doesn't appear to have changed. I also set it to the lowest possible security setting and that didn't have any effect either.
The default browser is mozilla firefox. However, I changed the default program for html files to internet explorer to see if that might fix it, but all that did was cause the recent files page to open in internet explorer instead of firefox.
Thank you for responding.
Hello Everyone,
This became a problem for myself as well in 2010, 2011, & 2012 Revit Architecture. Here is the solution. Thanks go out to Ashley Tisue @ Microdesk.
As a way to rule out the (almost) obvious…to find out if Firefox IS actually the issue:
Here was my exact procedure
I opened IE8 and the thing didn’t ask me to switch as default. So then I opened Google chrome and it asked me so I switched it, then I was like why didn’t IE ask me, so I open it and, go to properties/options (whichever) and change it to set as default. There is a check box to always ask, I must have told it stop asking me. Anyways. So I open my Revit 2010 and bam, it worked just fine.
BUT WAIT, THERE IS MORE! (corny advertisement)
So I asked myself, since I loathe IE, is this a Firefox issue or an Autodesk issue? I close Revit and open Firefox and set it back to default browser, because it is awesome…I then reopen Revit, and guess what, it works perfectly again like it used to.
Now I don’t know what this is all about, other than it seems that maybe an update in Firefox, might have caused a glitch in Autodesk’s Revit Html recent page file to not open in Revit, but this is all speculative, and it seems that this is only a great workaround and not a fix to the glitch. It’s more of a reset. But maybe our experience here can help lead others to the solution.
Thank you all for your time.
Brand new install of RAC 2012, same problem. Immediately on first run came up asking if I wanted to open index.html then when I said yes, it asked where I wanted to save it.
I'd Just reitterate the steps i mentioned earlier. I might even leave IE as the default browser until a patch comes out for this issue.
If that doesnt work, maybe you can tell us more about your system and installed programs, versions, etc.
General Note: If you havent already, look at the Updates for Revit 2012. There are several or maybe all that you will want to install.

It's a Windows 7 64 machine. It had Chrome installed but was uninstalled before Revit was installed. This was also a new user on the computer, so this account never started up Chrome.
It has MS Office XP installed, and IE 8. Other than that it's pretty clean.
I did try running IE, and tried to unselect it as the default web browser but I was unable to.
Hello.
Has Revit ever worked for you properly and is this new? If it is new, did you change any internet settings recently? New browser? New security settings?
Do you have multiple versions of Revit installed and does this affect all of them?
Like mentioned earlier, check the default web browser and switch from IE and back to IE.
You can navigate to C:\Users\YOUR USER ID\AppData\Local\Temp
Search for “Index.html” – it will be in a folder. Locate one and double click it- does it open? What browser? This is likely the browser to target your research.
Have you checked your Internet security settings? Are you running a pop-up blocker?
Turn off any collateral applications that may affect a web browser- pop up blockers, antivirus, anything that could affect a web page.
Something is blocking the program from accessing the html file properly. Hopefully one of these roadblocks can be identified.

I have seen this behavoir now in Revit 2014 on windows 7 64. The user has Firefox, Google and IE installed and the Recent file list when first opens, opens the Autodesk Web page for Revit. Has a more formal fix been issued or steps released when encountering mixed browsers and its effect on Revits recent file list?
I have this same issue. I tried to the trick outlined above, making IE the default and then switching back to Firefox as default but it didnt fix the problem. Anyone else found a fix for this yet?
