Parametric assignment of materials to imported objects ?

I have worked on assigning materials to imoprted CAD-objects in REVIT-families.
So far i succeeded by using the assignement within the "object styles" -> "imported objects" dialog seeing to have the imported CAD in sorted layers.

Is there though any way to have this assignement by a type-parameter, so that i donĀ“t have to make a single familyobject for each appearance ?

just go into the materials dialog and
see what came in with the import..

you can't miss them because they
will be grouped together with numbers
instead of names..

then just assign a different color to
each one of them and render the
import and make note of which
numbers go to what part of the
import..

i've never seen a reason to render
an imported wireframe other than as
one color for visual reference to help
me construct something similar in revit..

Useless as usual. The question was about parameters.

Thanks for the reply...
Actually the issue is not to figure out what came with the imported object, or how to assign a material by object styles as mentioned.
The question is how to do this with a "family parameter", so the appearance of an imported object in a family can be controlled parametrically.

thanks for the insight sharpshark..

The problem here is the way Revit handles the imported geometry. You can
never actually get a hold of the geometry "inside" of the imported DWG so
you can applay a parameter. Revit sees the entire DWG as one entity and
allows you to work with it at that level. the only way to do what you want
is to create native Revit geometry that can have a parameter assigned.
Other wise you are limited to assigning materials via the object styles
dialog as you have discovered already.

Thanks for the answer Jeff..

We might put it in the "wishlist" that this asignment by object styles, could have a parametric radio.

"You can never actually get a hold of the geometry"-
in revit- because CAD lines are only for reference..
same as pencil on paper..

"Revit sees the entire DWG as one entity"-
and you have to "work with it at that level"..
just lines with no information or intelligence..

you must "create native Revit geometry that
can have a parameter".. create revit lines
where CAD lines were..

exactly to the letter what i was saying..

and no amount of wishing will change
what CAD lines are..

thanks Jeff..

It may have been generally what you said (not at all "to the letter"), but
it was stated in a clear and concise manner in one comprehensive post that
made sense. Not once did you ever address the fact that parameters cannot
be assigned to imported geometry for material handling.

Scott-

yes i did state that CAD lines cannot
have parameters..

that was deleted before you got
there..

but yes you are correct about it
not being to the letter of the other
explanation but rather general..

it's all good for better understanding
revit anyway..

the ONLY thing i care about in here
is understanding revit better.. Edited by: Discussion_Admin on May 25, 2010 8:26 PM
