Modeling notched beam end condition

I need to make a beam family that has a default notch at the end of it.  Not quite the same as just a standard coping, I need to take a standard HSS beam and modify it so that it automatically has a U-shaped notch cut out of the top of it at each end.  I know that I could do this by creating generic families and just kind of faking it, but I'd like to try to make it as an actual beam.  Any help would be really appreciated.  Thanks!

Have you tried editing the original family and adding a void to cut out the are you want?

I have attached an image for reference...
