Material Transparency and Shadows

I would like to make a vertical sun shade have transparency of 25%. In effect it is translucent. When I do this, I loose the ability for the material to cast a shadow. I am not rendering this, only using the constant colors option. Can this be done and if so, how?

I found the following thread discussing this:

Currently, if there is transparency applied to an element, it does not cast shadows in plan views (although it will cast shadows when rendered).
