Inventor to Revit

I model everything in Inventor, but were gonan soon have to start offering downloadable models on our website.
One of them being a Revit file. I can export the model to adsk format but when i open the model it shows up in a large box. But if i click on the box, it appears that my model is inside. channging visual styles does nothing.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

What version of Inventor?  The 2014 version can save a file as an RFA (Revit Family). I would not export as an ADSK, as this is really just a DWG.

I'm using 2014 Inventor, and 2014 Revit.

Could you explain to me, how to export my inventor model to RFA format?

I don't see it as an option.

Ok, so i see the options when i export a single part. But i need to export an assembly. The problem here is that the .rfa option doesnt appear. All i get is just adsk.

Is Inventor installed wrong?

The adsk file is what you will need to export an assembly as in order to get it to work as a Revit family.  The next step is to open the file and then save it as an RFA file.  The box that your assembly is inside of is the Coarse Detail representation of the assembly for Revit, the Medium and Fine Detail will show the actually assembly.

Hi Scott

It takes quite some time to simplify the model, save as revit file and update in the revit model each time one makes a change to the model in inventor. we typically do pump station pipework and support details inventor and then import that into the revit building. Is there not a way to create a dynamic link to the inventor model and the revit model? That way the revit model will update automatically when re-opening the file. If not, can we add this to the wish list?

select first the box... and find the PIN... click to disable the lock... then, delete the blue box...

you have to un-pin in revit and delete the boundary box. We are having the same problems

Hi @llamas91

Please see Inventor to Revit Family File (RFA) Workflow

Also, see HERE for more information on how to Author and publish models so you can use them with AutoCAD and Revit.

See HERE for using the Simplify tools to reduce model complexity for faster referencing throughout your design process.

See a short video below on Inventor 2014 BIM Exchange to Revit Family process

Apologies for jumping into the middle of someone else's thread...

If we are embedding this item in concrete does this process result in a geometry Revit can recognise and cut concrete to suit around?

Hi,

I had the same issue. i tried the built-in transfer from Inventor to Revit, although i got rfa files, they weren't what i wanted. my entire model just came in as one block and it was basically just a bulk imported geometry. then i came across this tool inventor to revit exporter developed by bim-dex, through google search and i am now using a trial version of the plugin. it does what i exactly need and it is in many ways better than the inventor built-in transfer. if you are looking for better results from taking inventor assemblies to revit, i would definitely suggest this tool.

Sri

I am using the same workflow of converting ipt/iam to rfa. It appears fine when you view the objects from the outside, but you cannot get any section view from it. Anybody notice the same?

The solution is to fully explode the object. But not all objects can be fully explode.

What should I do to get a section view for the objects that cannot be fully exploded?
