Is it possible to somehow embed a nested family or some sort of reporting parameter into a mechanical shaft family to report the northing and easting of the bottom left corner?
There might be some manual workarounds, but if you want something more "heavy duty" there are some tools specifically designed for that purpose. Search for Trimble Points, or the new Autodesk Point Layout.
