HP printer error

When ever i print to my HP printers if i do not view my printer properties first i get an error in the setup saying that my printer settings are incompatible. Is someone working on a fix for this bug?

This isn't a bug, but an intentional heads up. If you select a printer that only does 8 1/2"x11" and your setup is for 30x42 - the message switches you to settings. The message box is to alert you that you should check the setting - but it lets you move along. Likewise -if your printer is set to on that does 8 1/2"x11" and you try to change to settings which are 30x42 it doesn't let you go back to the main print dialog. If it did you would have the option of hitting print even though the settings were not right. Now if you are just making some new print settings, from the file->print setup dialog - then just create your new settings and before you ok everything - just return to the option or whatever was set before you opened your dialog. You can avoid this dialog altogether if you just do file-print and then close after you have made your settings. Close will retain your setup. To add to what Aaron said, if the printer you use for Revit is not your Windows default printer, you will get this message (my default printer is an 8.5 x 11 printer, so if I have to plot to a large format printer, I get this message). This is not a heads up error. I can have the same exact settings and it will work fine if i got to the printer properties first but if i don't then it will give me the error.

also, it will not let me move along. i have to cancel the menu and go back to the previous menu and then enter my printer setup button.

Exactly - this is intentional as I said.... "Likewise -if your printer is set to on that does 8 1/2"x11" and you try to change to settings which are 30x42 it doesn't let you go back to the main print dialog. If it did you would have the option of hitting print even though the settings were not right." You should NOT have to go to the printer properties. (I'd be curious as to why you go into the printer properties...?) You should just be able to select the printer off the drop down list. Once selected Revit reads the printer's capabilities. THEN you can select the settings. As long as those settings work with the selected printer - you are good to go. What I do suggest is making all the print setup's you need and storing them in your template ahead of time. This will save a lot of time over the long run. We have 5 main printers we use. With the various sheet sizes we typically use - that means we have around 30 typical print setups to cover everything. AS I SAID - this is not the intentional incomparable issue. If you won't listen to what I am saying and you have not had the problem I am asking about please don't respond!!!!

Problem is you've given us little to work with. 1. What type of HP printer/plotter? 2. What is your default windows printer/plotter? 3. Is this a network printer/plotter? 4. Is this a Windows or Novell network? 5. What are the exact steps used to recreate the problem? 6. Can you post a sample Revit project with the setting you typically use? Without additional information, no one can help debug your problem. Just to say this "error" box pops up isn't enough info with out me and others making some assumptions. My assumption was that You do File Print->Settings and try to change to a different sheet size not supported by your printer. That is the most common route to the dialog and symptons you describe with the limited information provided. Hey now. Arron doesn't work for Autodesk and is just trying to help you out. I know you're frustrated with your problem and all, but you'd get a lot more help by being a little nicer in the dialog. Sorry I am getting frustrated and I have been asking myself if I made a mistake by shifting the company from Desktop to Revit. Sorry Aaron.

Here is my system
1. CP1700 and 7130xi
2. The 7130xi is my default printer
3. Neither printer is networked
4. Windows XP pro
5. Select the print icon. In the print window select the printer. Then I select the print setup button. No matter what settings I have set in the window it will tell me that I have an incomparability issue nor will it allow me to continue. I must cancel the menu then return to the initial print screen. Then I select the printer properties button and just hit ok in the window (no changes). Then when I return to the print setup everything works fine. I have to do this before every print.
6. It happens with any setting on every project.

Unfortunately with the replies that I have received no one else seems to be running into this issue. Which means it is an issue with which I am going to have a lot of problems.

Contact Revit support ASAP!!!! They will help you figure out the problem. I'm surprised you haven't done so already? I mean, these groups come up with a ton of answers, but something like this really sounds like a support effort. It does sound like an isolated case. I'd rather print in Revit any day over Autocad/ADT..... I've looked at the CP1700 Driver. It seems to have some issues I haven't seen with other printers. If I open the printer properties dialog form the print dialog and verify the paper size - there is never a problem. If I don't verify the paper size and then go to settings, I'll get the "Incompatible" and the sheet size might be blank or have the wrong page size listed. Typically you would see all the sheet sizes supported by you printer and be able to chose the right one. So it looks like the printers capabilities are not being reported to Revit correctly. What you are seeing is not typical. I'd report your findings to Revit support and I'm sure they will address the issue. Thank you, at least I am not completely crazy. I will talk to support about it.
