Is there a book or manual on creating families?

Not specifically for creating families. Several books touch on it. Unfortunately, the best methods for learing this are either the school of hard knocks, or paying Autodesk to send in one of their trainers for 3 to 5 days to teach families. Look at Paul Aubin's book, he has some info on families. Best thing is to being by reverse engineering some of the families that ship in the Library. Start with either Profiles, or Deatil Components (2D) and work your way up to 3D objects. Do NOT start with Doors, since thayu are actually one of the most complex objects to deal with in Revit.

The Revit Imperial or Metric Tutorial PDF file has a fairly extensive section (approx. 200 pages) on creating content - Families. YOu can download a copy of the entire tutorial PDF file from Autodesk website under Revit Documentation. This will get you started. Also, there are a number of tutorials on AUGI, AECBytes, Blogs, etc. and many other sites hosting Revit information.
