Duplicate beam

Hi,

I duplicated a beam1 and saved it as, say beam2.

After changing beam2's length I loaded it into project but the length of beam1 also changed followed beam2.

How do I changed beam 2 without affecting beam1?

Thanks

if you click on a beam and go to element properties>
type properties and duplicate it and name it something
else and change some parameters and ok out of
element properties- you can be sure your new
beam type will show up in the type selector
for beams..

Hi,

Thank you for explanation unfortunately nothing changes.

Let me explain once again:

1. I created a timber joist 150x50
2. I made some changes by modifying the end of this beam to suit its connection with other beams
3. I saved it with the new name, say beam 1.
4. I duplicated beam 1, made only a change in its length, and save it as beam 2.
5. Beam 1's length also changed follows beam 2

I have followed information from help menu also from some online helps but it's still remain same.

Can someone point it out,in detail, what's wrong with my steps?

poly-

you said:

"After changing beam2's length I loaded it into project"

what exactly do you mean by "loaded it" ?

poly-

this is a bit confusing but it's interesting..

apparently you have been in the family editor
and you have modified a timber joist..

then- "I saved it with a new name" ?
do you mean while you were still in the family editor
you went to "save as" > "family"? and named it
"Beam 1 .rfa" ?

or did you just load it into the project and
select "overright the existing version"?

you mentioned several things that don't add up
in my mind and i would like to get to the bottom
of this if you are not in a hurry..

Vector2,

Thank you for your time for accompanying me.

So far, I have done with two different ways:

1. While in plan/3D views, Click existing beam (beam1) and "edit family" tab.
Once I was in family editor:
- go to "Types" under "Family properties" Tab
- Create new family types (beam2) and press "OK"
- made some changes and load into project
- overright existing version

2. While in plan views, copy existing beam1.
Then click copied beam1 and following steps like I mention in point 1 above.

Check the length property of the beam. Is it a type property or instance? It
needs to be instance to avoid affecting all beams of the same type.

I think you have broken your beam family, to where the length is no
longer parametric at all.
