Door & Window Families

Is there something I have to do to load basic window and door families?

Or do I have to get individual families like Pella to get any windows?

A library of content comes with Revit, that contains windows and doors, as well as a variety of other families.  Some of these should be available when you start a project from one of the pre-defined templates that also comes with Revit.  You can then use the Load tool to locate and load additional families from the library, which can also include families you have built, or ones you have downloaded form websites like Seek.autodesk.com.

If you are not able to find this library, and no templates are found when starting a new project, then its likely you skipped the content installation portion when installing Revit.  You can "repair" the installation from Control Panel and will be given the option to install the content.
