Change all to Existing...?

Is there an easy way to change all the model geometry from New to Existing in one easy command? I drew a three story building complete with structural columns, beasms, curtain walls, doors, walls, floors, etc. and I need to now make it all 'Existing'.

Thanks in advance...

Two possible methods (neither of which is one-command):

1. Create a Multi-Category Schedule, select any one field, and disable "Itemize all instances". This should leave one cell; select it and click "Highlight in Model" on the Ribbon. Under Properties, the Phase parameters should be available but if not, use the Selection Filter to remove the non-applicable elements (such as Detail Items).

2. Go to Phases, create a New "New Construction" Phase at the end, select the original "New Construction" Phase and under 'Combine with:' click "Previous". This will move all of the Model Elements to the "Existing" Phase, but it will also set ALL of your Views to the Existing Phase as well.

Corey - thanks for the advice. I tried them both and the second one worked the best - the first suggestion did not select all the model elements (it found structure and curtain walls but not floors, walls, doors, windows). I appreciate your suggetions and your response - thank you!

go to a 3D view, window highlight all objects, and then change the Phase properties from New to Existing.

When I do option 2 the Graphic Overrides do not work. I need the whole model to grey out like an existing building for the next phase of the project.

3d view option doesn't really work. Have to filter out about everything as the "Phase Created" option is not accessible unless items are all within a certain category. And Curtain walls makes the Walls category have to be dropped from the Filter and then walls have to be selected individually.

JNM2013 - you will need to establish overrides for the phase at that point. This will be done through the Phase settings. There you can override 'existing' to have screened linework, thinner linework, etc. The Phase settings are higher priority than individual view settings, I believe so sometimes overriding view-specific graphics does not always work when using phases.

As @CoreyDaun noted, all of your views are now set to the Existing phase.  In such a view, items assigned to the Existing phase are shown as "new" because they were created in that phase.  Either reset the phase of the views to the New Construction phase you added or create new Views and assign the New Construction phase to them.  Now the items created in the Existing phase are from a previous phase, and the filter settings applied to previous phase objects will be applied.  If your settings have previous phase items "grey out", then that is how they will be seen in New Construction views that show Previous + New.

Option 2 worked out great for me. However, I was wondering if there is an easy way to delete everything that is shown as demo from a previous project. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Why would you want to delete all demoed items? Do you mean you want to un-demo them?

I have not tried to do this myself, and unfortunately do not have the time right now, but I imagine that Dynamo could be used to select all of the objects that are marked as being demolished in a given phase (in this case, the Existing phase, since the items previously demolished in the "old" New Construction phase were merged into the Existing phase ) and delete them.

After selecting all geometry in 3D View you van use the drop-down menu in the Properties Panel to go through all categories and find the Phase property per category.

That method worked for me, thanks!

1. Rename the phase Existing to Pre-existing;

2. Rename the phase New to Existing;

3. Create a new phase called New placed after Existing;

4. Adjust your templates and or Phase overrides accordingly

P.S. Phases don’t have to be called new and existing. They can be coded, Phase A, B, C, or even use the year the item was constructed, 1929, 1988, 2020. Having them named New/Existing while helpful for beginners makes it harder to realize that they are simply sequential periods in the life of the building being modeled.

I think the cheat way to do it is to go into your Phases tab, and merge "Existing" onto "New Construction" then rename the "New Construction" as "Existing" and create a new phase after that one called "New Construction". Worked like a charm for me!

I hate to necro this thread but I cannot for the life of me get this to work as explained. I'm on Revit 2019.

I go to Phases -> Create a new phase called "Existing for real now" inserted before the phase "Existing" where everything has been modelled in -> I select phase "Existing" -> Combine with Previous.

When I check in the Phase Filter settings and choose "Not Displayed" for everything New, the model disappears so it's still not in the correct phase. Existing is set to "By Category". The Phase Filter has been set correctly in the model space.

Simply create a new phase, set the view to this phase, phase filter = show previous, then everything is shown as existing. No merging phase, no phase filter/ override modifications needed.
