best solution to generate thumbnails of DWG, DXF and Revit files

We're investigating ways of creating thumbnails of DWG, DXF and Revit files for use in a browser application:

- the user drops a Revit file on the window

- file uploads to server

- loaded by Revit (?)

- model & camera positioned

- snapshot taken/image saved

- image returned to browser

We know we can probably do it using Revit and the API.

The question is whether it can be done using cheaper tools:  Revit LT, or even other options.  As long as:

- those file formats are fully supported

- we can somehow pose the model and cameras (might also require getting model bounds)

We know Revit LT does not support 3rd party APIs, but maybe it can be controlled through a TCP port?

Any advice, insight and ideas welcome!

Hello,

If thumbnail images are good enough than the following blog posts should help:

Cheers
