Interrupt user selection?

Is there a way to interrupt or cancel user selection from within the API?

Here's the scenario:

1. In a command, I open a modeless dialog and then prompt the user for a selection from the drawing.

2. If the user clicks a certain button in the dialog, I need to stop the selection and do something else.

I can't seem to find a way to stop the user selection.  Anyone know if this is possible?
