Plugin load/unload problem

I have a plugin that has stopped unloading properly. Here's a replay of what is happening:

1. I load the plugin from a fresh start in Maya (version 1). My plug in works.

2. I Compile a fresh build of the plugin (version 2)

3. I unload the plugin (version 1) in Maya and attempt to reload the new plugin (version 2).

4. When I run the plugin, it is still holding onto version 1.

If I restart Maya, version 2 now is working!

I have verified that I am overwriting the plugin. 

So it appears that Maya, even though the plugin appears unloaded in the plugin-gui, isn't completely releasing the first version. I know this is a vague scenario. Just wondering if anyone is aware of possible conditions that might cause this?
