Xerox 510 Wide Format Plotter????

We have had the Xerox 510 up and running since early July.
Its got to be the biggest piece of crap we have ever had.
We had an 8830 for maybe 8 years or so and like any piece of
equipment it needed to be replaced.
Since we've had 510, it has had so many problems The drum, a couoke of
clutches and the hard
drive on the controller has all been replaced in the short time since we've
had it and I've changed
the toner once.
Now everything seemed fine until this afternoon. We got a LL-25 "Call for
Assistance" today.
I spoke to the Tech on the phone and he says the plotter needs to be
cleaned.
For all who have a 510, How often does your machine need to be cleaned?
We do about 20,000 linear feet per month
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks,

Our 510 has been terrific! Very few problems and uses much less toner than
our old 8830.
We run about 10,000 LF per month and get it cleaned every month or two.

I hope you have a service contract on that machine, for all the troubles
you've been having.

Thanks for the quick response.
Yes, We do have a service contract. But, the down time has been insane and
I'm sick of listening to people complain.
When we had the 8830, I don't remember it needing to be cleaned out after
about 30,000 LF. I want to blow that thing up.
The service tech has been here so often, He asked for a desk and a phone.

We used to have a tech that thought he knew what he was doing, but after
switching service contracts to a different company, we learned that our new
technician is much more knowledgable.

Hi Howard,

We used to have the Xerox 510. Get used to the LL-25 message. We just got the Xerox 6050A and it hasn't broken down yet. I love it better than the 510 and the 8830. Good Luck!

This model has an inherited design flow. It melts the toner seals very quick -they are plastic- thus if you have high outputs it wears them down. I had this model for over a year, and numerous cleanings. I've budgeted and ask for a newer model in 09

Howard...I've been a XES xerox tech for over 20 years and now have been working for a xerox wide format dealership in Mancher,ct..The 8830 from time to time would get streaks when the tech would come in to clean the corotron it might of been bi-weekly to every months depending on your volume or how you printed {ie..no volume to heavy printing}..This is kinda of the same thing with the 8850 ..they had some real problems with the tonering and developing systems of this model where developer is getting drawn out in the BTR roll [the component below the drum that charges the paper]..The tech has to check the seal to the drum which has to replaced probably yearly[these seal are on the developer unit that are made of foam and provides a gap between the developer unit and the drum] and also if this is a common occurrence{a couple of callbacks within a few weeks time for which is normal for this type of problem between volume of prints] there might be pinholes on the drum causing developer to be drawn out into the developer channel..
Howard I hope this sheds some light on your problem which has been a achilles heel of this good xerox product.
