Well... I tried the settings craigbtg suggested but to no avail.
I am attempting to use a hp5100 and printing through a server.
Craig are you on a similar setup or are you printing directly?
Not to rain on anyone's parade but it could be that many of these "fixes" are probably just flukes. Yesterday I couldn't print despite my custom 11x17 print size (one of the suggested fixes) and today I can. So I guess I could say that rebooting fixed the problem or maybe the driver works better on Fridays .
Entropist - yes, printing through a share off a print server. More specifically, this is the procedure I used to set up the printer.
Added a local printer on the server using a TCP/IP port and entered the IP for both the address and port name.
Chose Have Disk and browsed to my Universal Printer Driver PS 5.0.
Shared the printer with few letters and no spaces (found this to be a problem in the past, not necessarily for this issue).
Once the printer is added, go to printer properties, Port Tab, Configure Port, change to LPR and enter "print" in queue name. Disabled SNMP.
Also, went to the Device Settings tab and disabled Mopier Mode and Job Storage.
This procedure consistently worked for me, regardless of printer driver. You may want to try it from scratch if you did not on the first pass. Maybe set up a test printer share and try that. You may also need to remove a previously installed printer on a client and re-add the printer to make sure it is grabbing all of the correct settings.
This didn't work for me. Autodesk continues to say they are waiting for a fix from HP... even though these 64bit drivers work fine in every app I've tried so far except CAD/MEP/C3D and even with those, only 11x17.
I hope they are working together and that this can be resolved. It's turning in to a real PITA.
craigbtg's fix worked for me.
The orignal driver install worked for about a week, reinstalled under craigbtg's fix and walah its printing 11x17 again.

I have the same problem with A3 paper on our 5550n. I'm using AutoCAD Mechanical 2010 and Vista64. Everything else works fine, except this combination, which causes AutoCAD to crash. The suggested workarounds didn't work for me.
It looks like there may be a new HP driver that works. The new HP Universal Postscript driver posted August 31, 2010 appears to work for 11x17 on 64 bit machines. The driver can be downloaded directly from the hp driver site. There is still a possibility the driver may have other issues, but things are looking good so far in my testing.
If anyone else tries it out, please post back to the group with results.
We always ask our IT people not to install the PostScript drivers because they have larger margins which don't allow our drawings to fit on 11x17 and the plotfile sizes are significantly higher (much longer print times). Hopefully there is a corresponding PCL driver that fixes the problem as well.
PCL versus postscript is an entirely different topic. It all depends on your needs. Postscript will print certain graphics better, match fonts better, shade better. PCL will print quicker and be less memory instensive.
Fortunately, there was also an HP Universal PCL driver posted on August 31. I haven't tried it, but I would hope it also fixes the 11x17 printing issue in Acad 2009/2010 on 64 bit machines. If anyone tries it out please let everyone know if it works out.
