pointer cannot be used as a tablet

CalComp DrawingBoard III, Windows XPSP3, AutoCAD 2007, combination has been working flawlessly for over four years and worked perfectly with AutoCAD 2000 before that. Options window allows "use digitizer or mouse" with Wintab 4.2 driver selected. TabletWorks 10.09 build 24 has been working flawlessly for over two years. Tablet functions as a mouse in Windows and AutoCAD, but "TABLET" command will not allow tablet to turn on or configure, even though it worked fine last week. "REINIT" and "TABMODE" have no effect. I assumed a driver had somehow become corrupted, but re-installing TabletWorks hasn't fixed the problem. Suggestions?
