PLM 360 provides the tools needed to mass-Import data into a target workspace.
This PLM TV video highlights the steps to import from Microsoft Excel.
Manually, it is possible to add BOM items from other workspaces ('Parent' item in Workspace A and 'child' item in Workspace B).
How is this done using the bulk import tool? Currently it only allows us to import BOM items if the 'parent' and 'child' items are from the same workspace.
The design of the the Import tool is to import mass record information and create records within one workspace. We commonly refer to it as a BOM import as we find it is most frequently used to import items in a BOM and has the ability to create the child parent relationship of the BOM within that workspace but can import other metadata as well.
If your interested in learning more about the Import Tool process, the following videos are available:
It is common for a BOM to have a wide variety of components/items associated in it (For Example Screws, Washers, Nuts, Hardware, Motors and sub-assemblies). Many would organize those components/items in more than one workspace within PLM360.
In order to mass create/update BOMs of a specific product practically, the import tool must allow access to add/remove 'child' items from other workspaces - Especially if PLM360 allows you to do it manually.
Having access to only the 'Parent' workspace in the import tool is impractical. This either results in poor item organization within the workspace when trying to make the import tool work OR results the user performing a tedious manual process.
Overall, I think the import tool is a great feature for BOMs; however it still needs to incorporate a multi-workspace functionality to serve its purpose practically.
Sounds like you have some great ideas on improving the Import Tool.

Thanks for the feedback.
I am desperatly trying to import a BOM, where the majority of BOM items are located in a different workspace.
From these posts it is clear that I am not the only one who had had this problem.
Did it get resolved?
Am I trying to do something that PLM360 simply does not support?
At this time you can create an Import Project to import directly into one workspace.
Please share your ideas of being able to import directly into multiple workspaces using one Import Project with the PLM 360 Development Team by posting them to the Autodesk PLM 360 IdeaStation to be weighted and potentially used in a future release of the product. Include how important this would be to your business process so they understand how valuable this would be.
