What is the mechanism or process for things appearing in my oustanding work?

can you give me an example of an item i can create that should prompt for that item to appear in the "my outstanding work" section of the dashboard?

Hello,

Expand My Outstanding Work to display links to workflow items that need your attention. Think of this as your "To do" list.  If a workflow item has a milestone assigned, a Flag icon appears to the left of the item's link. If the milestone is on time, the icon is green. If the milestone is within its warning period and close to being late, the icon is yellow. If the milestone is late, the icon is red.
