How to set a default value for the BOM UOM picklist ?

I have a UOM field using the BOM UOM picklist in Item Details.  I have noticed that when editing records, the 'Each' choice shows on the Workspace Manager, but that unless you actually pick this again, it does not show up on the record.  I deduced therefore, that the field must be set to 'Show First Value' as default.  So, I went to set it to choosing 'Each' as the default value and found that I couldn't :

This seems confusing for users who won't necessarily think to pick the unit of measurement again if 'Each' is already showing and they don't need to change it to something else.

I can see that if you add Validation to have to choose something from the drop-down list, then someone can edit the record without having to touch this field and when they save it, it will save the 'Each' option without prompting further, so that perhaps counts as a workaround.

This isn't a big issue, but having the ability to treat a field using this picklist similar to using other picklists would improve both flexibility and consistency.

Hi Fiona,

I can see that the UOM picklist behaves differently from other picklists in the sense that it is missing the empty selection i.e. -- Select --. I will log this as new feature request. For now, you could consider adding new unit to the UOM manager to have a new default value in your UOM picklist. The UOM manager is accessible from Administration > System Configuration > Units of Measure.
