Standalone Application?

From the ObjectARX Documentation:

The CUI API provides an interface for creating and manipulating the CUI
files. This can be done external to AutoCAD, using a stand-alone
application. Since such code does not run in the AutoCAD application
environment, it does not have access to AutoCAD runtime data or other
runtime APIs.

Stand-alone applications are also unable to run certain methods that depend
on the AutoCAD runtime environment.

Considering the statements above, I was just wondering what would be the
point of writing a standalone application instead of a plug-in.

First, can I ask where you are reading this from?

One useful role of a standalone app is an installer
for an AutoCAD application.

In the ObjectARX Postrio Developer's Guide, the 2006 section on "Using .NET
and COM for ObjectARX Development" has now been divided into two sections,
"Using .NET for ObjectARX Development" and "Using COM for ObjectARX
Development". Under the .NET section is the heading "Standalone
Applications".

I'm been using the Postrio SDK because the .NET documentation in 2006 is
somewhat lacking.

Has the NDA been lifted on (what I am assuming
"Postrio" is) AutoCAD 2007 ?

I don't know. I haven't downloaded AutoCAD 2007 and ObjectARX doesn't come
with a license agreement. After reading this, I looked around on the ADN
site and didn't see anything either. Hopefully there's not some general
blanket agreement about betas I missed.

I'm not writing an application for AutoCAD 2007, just using the 2007
documentation and .NET samples because the 2006 .NET API isn't worth a
hoot...
