In 2011, go to the view bar, and choose background in the scene view portion of the ribbon.

The background & the stereo enable on the View tab are grayed out so I cannot click on them.

You might need to load a file first?

Hello LutherKinman7760 ,

You will need to have a file loaded to use the “Background” option on the ribbon. As soon as you load a file, you should see the option become available. Click the Background option and the Background Settings window will display. You can change both the sky and ground color.

is there a setting in the option to define a default background.  it would save repetative effort and time to be able to set the horizon with a muted sky and ground default as the background.

Once you have set the background and press save, this should be remenbered in the NWF file you have open.
So if you are talking about repetative effort, I quess that you are talking about different NWF files. Then there are two options:
1) when starting a new NWF, try to open an exiting NWF that has the background an already a model attached. Attachthe model needed, delete the old models and save as.
2) do start a change equest to have an NWF template file where backgorund and unit settings are stored. The more the request is made, the more Autodesk people will understand that the save as workaround is not accepted by the users.

Thanks.  I figured those would be the options.  I will put in the request for template files with AutoDesk.  I think they would serve a variety of purposes just as DWT's and seed RVT's server their other products.
