Trouble With Hyperlinks and Using Relative Path

I am linking objects in the NWD file to pdfs. I will then be moving the whole folder with the model and associated links to a flash drive then to another computer. I have successfully done this in the past with using relative path but it does not work with this NWD. I will explain what I did below for hyperlinking with relative path (I still have the model on my laptop and drop box and it still works) and I'll explain the new model set up although they are essentially the same just 1 extra folder depth. I have not changed any setting on the new NWD but can not get this to work again.

Model that Is successfully linked

Location of NWD

c:\Project folder\Project.nwd

Location of Linked PDFs

c:\Project folder\Fixtures

Example Location of Linked a specific PDF

C:\Project folder\Fixtures\TypeB.pdf

With in the model, the hyperlink address to Fixture type B

Fixtures\TypeB.pdf

(Just for the record I also tried the / slash and that works as well )

The above set up works... I did research a while ago with the relative path and hyperlinks to get this to work.I click the model and the object hyperlink and boom pdf pops up.

Now for my model that is being difficult.

Location of NWD

C:\FINAL MODEL1\FINALMODEL\Final.nwd

Location of Linked PDFS

C:\FINAL MODEL\MODEL\Hyperlinks

SIDE NOTE: The current locations I show are simply just for retesting the hyperlinks with this model and I cant get it to work again, I will probably need more folder depth for the final model as I am linking 1000+ Items. Below are 2 example of how I was planningon setting up my folders to relative path with the 1000+ links.

Example: C:\FINAL MODEL1\MODEL\Hyperlinks\Fixtures

Example:C:\FINAL MODEL1\MODEL\Hyperlinks\AHUs

Example Location of Linked a specific PDF

C:\FINAL MODEL\MODEL\Hyperlinks\TypeB.pdf

With in the model, the hyperlink address to Fixture type B

Hyperlinks\TypeB.pdf

The only thing that is different is that the file is 1 more folder deep. I can not figure out what the issue is.

I get the following error when trying to follow the hyperlink in the model that is nore working.

Failed to resolve link:

Hyperlinks\TypeB.pdf

Has anyone had experience linking a large amount of pdfs to a Navisworks model that will have to be transfered to another computer? If so how did you set up your relative path? How did yo uset up your folders? I thought I had it all figured out bc I have gotten it to work but now it will not and I have no idea why. For the record the above folder paths are not the exact folder names as my folder names and file names are much longer, not sure if there is a character limit I am not aware of but if figured Id mention it.

Thanks!

After discussing this with sta, we found that replacing "C:\FINAL MODEL\" with "..\" works (where just deleting out the beggining path does not).

did you place the url in between doulbe coutes ?
Did you start with . to point to the current folder or .. to point to the folder above the NWD file ?

If Patrick's reply doesn't lead to a solution, it would help if you could provide the following:

- What is the location of the NWD?

- What is the location of the linked file?

- What is the relative path used.

I'm having some similary issues linking with relative paths in NW Manage 2015.

I am creating the links in ACAD2014, and then using NWCOUT to export to NW.  The relative links I have work ok when following them through ACAD, but it seems they are not being translated into the .NWC.  When I open the NWC in NW2015 - I see no links.

My folder structure is:

..Job Folder\Model\Model.dwg
..Job Folder\Model\Model.nwc
..Job Folder\Assemblies\PDFs\Linked-File1.pdf
..Job Folder\Assemblies\PDFs\Linked-File2.pdf
..Job Folder\Assemblies\PDFs\Linked-File3.pdf
etc

The hyperlinks I am producing in ACAD look like "..\Assemblies\PDFs\Linked-File1.pdf".

Is there any way I can get these hyperlinks into Navisworks?

Thanks a lot for any help.

I think the root cause is that the NWD or NWF is in a folder next to the links and i presume relative links only work within subfolders of the folder where the model is standing.
If this is correct, moving the Assemblies next to the model could work:
.Job Folder\Model\Model.dwg
..Job Folder\Model\Model.nwc
..Job Folder\Model\Assemblies\PDFs\Linked-File1.pdf
..Job Folder\Model\Assemblies\PDFs\Linked-File2.pdf
..Job Folder\Model\Assemblies\PDFs\Linked-File

Thanks a lot for the reply Patrick.

I beleive I managed to solve the issue by adding a description to the HYPERLINK in ACAD, in NW the description is the Link name (if I'm not mistaken).

This allowed me to maintain the existing folder structure.

Thanks again.
