REVIT MATERIAL PARAMETERS

Hi guys

Successfully managed to get all my wall material layers from Revit to Navis Manage 2012. Great!!

But I can´t get material shared parameters created in Revit to show up in Navis.

I can get my type and element shared parameters to show up, but not for the materials.

These parameters bear cost assembly codes and names, so the idea is to make a selection set that shows the project cost plan in full. Managers can then easily locate contractual assembly items in the model.

The problem is I can only identify assemblies that have been assigned to types and I am missing all those assigned to materials.

Please anybody to throw some light on this one?

Great thanks in advance

Cheers.

Hi robertoga,

To bring your wall material layers into Navisworks are you using Create Parts on the walls in Revit and exporting with the Convert Construction Parts setting marked in the Navisworks Exporter?

Please let me know if I understand the issue correctly,

1. In Revit, you created project parameters for the material category.

2. In Manage > Materials, you specified the values for those project parameters in the Custom Properties panel of the Identity tab for the materials that are included in the layers of your walls.

3. When you export to Navisworks, you are not able to search on any of these properties, which would most likely be found under the “Revit Material” category.

Is this a correct restatement of the issue?

I tested the steps above and regardless of having convert construction parts or convert element properties marked in the settings, I too was not able to find these the properties using Quick Find in Navisworks as I don’t believe that they convert.

I did find that if I use Create Parts in Revit to break the wall layers into parts and export with Convert Construction Parts marked, then project parameters created for the Parts category do come through in Navisworks in the Element property category.

Am I understanding the issue correctly and if so, would you be able to use the parts category for the project parameters rather than materials? If I misunderstood the issue, would you be able to post a simple example that demonstrates the issue and some screenshots to explain?

Dear John

You have understood the issue correctly:

Shared parameters for the Material category created in Revit do not appear under the "Revit Material" nor "Materials" in Navis.

I´ll forward you a small Revit and Navis file and some screen shots to illustrate the issue. That will be on Wednesday, since I´m away from office.

As for construction parts we can´t create shared parameters in them. Its faster and is more integrated in the workflow of our lab project to assign assemblies to materials.

Besides"Create Parts" only works for walls (?) and doesn´t solve the issue for other Revit Categories where layers are used (floors, roofs )

We´ll give construction parts a further look, but there´s a load of code written relying on material parameters being "selectable" in Navis.

Look forward very much to hear from you.

Best regards and thanks

Roberto

Hi robertoga,

I found when exporting to an ODBC database in Revit, the "Material" table in the exported database includes columns for the project parameters.   As a workaround, would you be able to export to an ODBC database in Revit, and then connect to that database in Navisworks via Datatools?

For example, if you export to a MDB file from Revit, then in Navisworks, you can open Home > Project  > File Options > DataTools and connect to that same DSN that you exported to from Revit.  The exported MDB will contain a table “Materials” that has the column “Name”.  You can link these materials to the “Revit Material – Name” properties that are brought through in the NWC file. In the SQL statement in DataTools, you can use:

SELECT * FROM Materials WHERE Name = %prop("Revit Material","Name");

In the Fields/Display list in DataTools, you would enter your shared parameter names (case sensitive). Then when you select an item based off the material name, you’ll see a tab in the properties window for your datatools link that will list all your shared parameters for the selected material.

Information on exporting to an ODBC database from Revit can be found here: http://wikihelp.autodesk.com/Revit/enu/2012/Help/Revit_User's_Guide/1394-Document1394/2112-Print_Ex2...

Information on DataTools in Navisworks can be found in the Help > Help Topics in Navisworks under Contents > Get a Whole-Project View > Review your Model > Object Properties > External Database Link

Please let me know if this helps, and I’ll keep an eye out for your file.

Hi there,

I was just wondering whether there was a way of directly using the Unit weight parameter of the materials in Revit in a formula. The information is there yet at the moment I am having to input the density as a shared parameter for each family.

Regards.

Hi NB12,

Would you be able to post a non-sensitive example file that demonstrates the material unit weight issue you are running into?

How were you able to get all of the wall material layers into Navis?  So far, I'm only able to get the outer layer materials to show up.  Thanks for any help you can provide!
