Navisworks 2012 explodes assemblies

I'm evaluating Navisworks 2012 with the free trial to see if it will work for us and I really like what it seems like it should do.  But i just tried to import a large assembly file from Inventor 2012 and Navisworks exploded random subassemblies.  The file opens fine in Inventor with no errors and correctly assembled.  When I bring it into my Navisworks assembly parts are moved all over the place and sub-assemblies were exploded.  Anyone else have this experience or have an idea on how to fix this?  I'm shrinkwrapping the assembly now to see if that will work.

MATTR ,

Hello. Have you checked your inventor loader settings?

1.)   Open Navisworks.

2.)   Click the Navisworks Application Button > Options.

3.)   Click File Readers > Inventor. These are your available Inventor settings.

4.)   I would start with “Convert Work surfaces” turned on.

5.)   Delete any existing NWC file associated with your Inventor model.

6.)   Close Navisworks + Restart.

7.)   Load your Inventor model (will create a new NWC file).

I tried this today and still no luck.  I have attached a pdf files to show the exploded file in Navisworks and another to show the actual file in Inventor.

MATTR,

Thank you for the update and screenshots. So far, I cannot tell what is going on with your model on import. Can you create this on a small scale? That is, can you create a smaller sample file and upload it to the post for me to review?

I believe we have a 1.5 meg limit on upload. It can be a simple file as long as it is exhibiting the same behavior.

Just to add my penny's worth - I have the same problem with Navisworks 2012 opening Inventor assembly - scatters components all over the place - a mess. Tried opening an assembly that has not been through Navisworks - same problem.

If I open an Inventor 2012 assembly - same problem - parts misplaced - a small assembly!

I have gone back to Navisworks 2011 - all is fine.

Same here. I have exploded sub assemblies when I import Inventor 2012  files into Navisworks 2012. The exploded subassemblies are  from with Frame Generator and Tube & Pipe.

I have not issues witht the rest of sub assemblies. I have the problem with any size of assemblies.

I ended up exporting as a sat file and bringing that into Navisworks, then the scale got messed up but at least that is fixable.  Pretty dissapointing that inventor and Navisworks don't play well togeather.

Hi

We've seen this happen to a few assemblies now and we're looking to get it resolved in a future release. However people power always works with these things, and obviously we'd like minimum disruption for you guys. Can you all log a support request through the Subscription Center with a sample file and we'll ask you to fill in a business case document. This will help us prioritise the issue, and the files will help us confirm that any fixes do work on your files.

MATTR,

Hello. We are still investigating the issue and although we don’t have a set solution for you, one of the processes that worked on a few test files was this:

1. Open your problematic model in Inventor

2. Delete all your Design Views, except the Master.

3. Save iam file.

4. Open your file in Navisworks.

We know this isn't ideal, so should only be used in extreme circumstances. There may be unintended side effects with the load, particularly with colors and materials.

Hopefully this will help while we continue to search for a more permanent solution.

Workaround NOT acceptable. I am working with assemblies larger than 20000 parts with a lot of design views and I don't want to avoid to break the link between Inventor and Navisworks.

I am testting Factory suite Advanced 2012 and wanted to migrate my AIP Pro 2011 suite to it, but I will pospone the migration until Autodesk does a working solution.

Maybe a tip for Autodesk :Inventor 2012 and Navisworks 2011 works like a charme.

Hi erolland

Have you logged a support case yet, you are the exact type of user we need business cases from to help us prioritize this issue. I'd like to get a business case from your team. Please can you log into the subscription center and log a case, and we'll get the business case document across to you.

A little extreme, but I can confirm that it solved the issues I was having with my file. If you are nervous you can always copy the file before editing and play around with that one.
