Is it possible to read attributes from drawings without visibily opening the drawings using an AutoCAD addin?

I am desiging an addin where I need to open drawings from an electrical project and read an attribute without visibily displaying the drawing.  I was wondering whether this is possible before I put too much effort in to something which may not actually work.

Since you mention "AutoCAD plug-in" then it is possible to open a drawing and read its contents without it being active/displayed from inside an active AutoCAD application - have a search for "side database".  If you are referring to opening a DWG file without AutoCAD, its not impossible but difficult and/or expensive.
