There are several places you can begin. If you want to stay in the Autodesk
world then you need to look at Map and MapGuide. Check with you locale
Autodesk training center or tech college for classes on developing for those
software suites.
ESRI is big guy in the GIS realm. They offer classes on developing for their
software platforms including ArcObjects, MapObjects, ArcIMS, and ArcGIS.
Most schools that offer GIS certificates or degrees have classes on the ESRI
software platforms.
Then there is open source software such as GRASS and MapServer. Since these
are open source they are mostly learn as you go. Some Colleges also offer
classes on the open source software. The best thing about these are they are
free and can run on multiple platforms.
I also recommend you check with some local GIS users groups. I am not sure
where you are located but check for a local URISA or GITA chapter. In
northern Florida the is a great users group called SHRUG. They are very
active and have a great conference in October every year.
