GPS/GIS development stuff...

Does anyone know anything about GIS development? I think that it might tie into CAD, but is there anywhere I can go to learn about this? I am interested in GIS/GPS and would like to know how I can get some experience in development in this area. Thanks!

There are several places you can begin. If you want to stay in the Autodesk
world then you need to look at Map and MapGuide. Check with you locale
Autodesk training center or tech college for classes on developing for those
software suites.

ESRI is big guy in the GIS realm. They offer classes on developing for their
software platforms including ArcObjects, MapObjects, ArcIMS, and ArcGIS.
Most schools that offer GIS certificates or degrees have classes on the ESRI
software platforms.

Then there is open source software such as GRASS and MapServer. Since these
are open source they are mostly learn as you go. Some Colleges also offer
classes on the open source software. The best thing about these are they are
free and can run on multiple platforms.

I also recommend you check with some local GIS users groups. I am not sure
where you are located but check for a local URISA or GITA chapter. In
northern Florida the is a great users group called SHRUG. They are very
active and have a great conference in October every year.

Hi,

Before you start 'customising' in this specialised field you need to have a
good knowledge of what is already available so save reinventing the
reinvention of the wheel.

Look around as advised by Tripp and find someone you can talk to about what
types of customising are needed.

I suspect that you will find that customisation in this field will usually
be with large scale projects which are somewhat unsuited to programs which
you can write in a few months in your spare time.

I would put Trimble, Topcon and Leica on the list of of companies to
contact. They all make GPS hardware and have highly active development
works proceding in this field.

Also search the web for GPS software, so you have an idea of what is out
there.

Lastly:
You have posted this over many NGs which is the best way to ensure that you
get uncoordinated replies and is also against the Guidelines for using these
NGs.
