AutoCAD programming and developping through VB.net for dummies

Hi there,

I know I am going to ask something that was probably asked several times
here. I've tried to search the NG about what I need and it seems that there
is a lot (too much?) of information, but I am not able to compile all this
stuff in order to decide what it takes and what I need.

I have a pretty fair knowledge in programming and customising AutoCAD using
AutoLISP, VisualLISP, VBA and VB. I understand what it is and how ObjectDBX
(or RealDWG), ActiveX and OOP work. I would like to start investing some
time in learning VB.net. In my company, we program and develop for AutoCAD
2005 and there is no chance to upgrade to 2007, but I would rather think
that we will make an update no sooner than AutoCAD 2008.

On my machine I have Windows XP Professional 2002 (SP2), AutoCAD 2005 and MS
VisualBasic 6.0. So what I would like to know is:

1) What do I need to install considering my PC configuration, in order to
be able to start learning and using VB.net ? Right now I need to be able to
work and to test under AutoCAD2005, even if we are going to move to another
version sooner or later.

2) Can you recommend some good, clear, concise, for dummies tutorials,
books, articles or materials?

3) Does somebody know some good web sites focused on my object of interest,
i.e. AutoCAD programming and developing through VB.net?

Thanks in advance,

Constantin

You can program AutoCAD using a .NET language & using the ActiveX API.

The .NET API is more powerful but also more complex. The .NET API was very limited with 2005 and has grown substantially since.

Maybe by the time you get the AutoCAD upgrade there will be more/better resources for learning the .NET API.

Thanks Nathan,

I see your point, but I would like to start learning anyway, because
although by the time I'll get the AutoCAD upgrade there will be more/better
resources for learning the .NET API, it will (most probably) become more and
more sofisticated and complex.

Your answer is a little bit of a very general considerations. I would really
want to know, to understand what do I need, what does it take, what do I
have to install, how to start doing something (let's say the "Hello World"
message 🙂 in this new .NET environment. Do I need to install something on
top of my Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 ? Can you provide more details please ?

To get started (at no cost) you can download vb.net express from m$ for free.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vb/

Here's a thread on using it with acad2005.

Good luck, if you have problems keep posting. There are a lot of people here who will help you out.

No I have run into a problem. On the m$'s "Visual Basic 2005 Express
Edition" download site it says: "Before installing, you must uninstall any
previous versions of SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio 2005, and the .NET
Framework 2.0 (this includes Tech Preview, Beta, or CTP versions)..." I can
see VB 6.0 is not listed here, but I am wondering that maybe it's so
obsolete that they didn't even bother to name it here. Consequently, I am
not sure that this includes Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0, because if true, I
can not uninstall it, since I use it to develop some other stuff. So my
question here is:

do I have to uninstall VB 6.0 or not.?

Thanks in advance

No you don't. You can run them side by side.
